We are looking for a proactive and pragmatic Legal Counsel with a passion for supply chain sustainability. In this role, you will draft, organize, and negotiate various agreements while providing expert legal support to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

The Role

As Legal Counsel, you will be responsible for identifying and mitigating legal risks, protecting IDH's reputation, and achieving strategic objectives. This position can be based at our headquarters in Utrecht, the Netherlands, or in Nairobi, Kenya.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on procurement, multi-stakeholder activities, intellectual property, commercial contracts, and other relevant legal areas. • Serve as the first line of legal support, escalating to specialist counsel when necessary. • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of agreements and contracts. • Ensure contracts comply with applicable laws and organizational policies. • Identify legal issues and propose solutions that balance business interests with risk control. • Collaborate with relevant teams to manage risks associated with contracts and funding. • Contribute to the continuous improvement of legal policies, processes, and templates. • Stay current with legal knowledge to strengthen organizational practices. • Partner with internal stakeholders to provide legal input on business decisions and strategy. • Deliver training on legal topics relevant to IDH's operations.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Law. • 1 to 3 years of relevant experience as an in-house legal professional or attorney. • Strong commercial awareness and understanding of international dynamics and business principles. • Excellent communication skills, fluent in English (Dutch language knowledge is appreciated but not required). • Demonstrable knowledge or prior experience in European and national/international law matters.

Nice to Have

• Experience with technology and data-related legal work (data sharing/licensing, SaaS, IP in data, EU AI Act). • Working knowledge of privacy law and GDPR (e.g., CIPP/E or equivalent).

What We Offer

• A challenging role within an impactful international organization. • Salary range between EUR 4,143 – 5,179 (excluding 8% holiday allowance) per month, based on a 40-hour work week. • Full-time (40 hours) 1-year contract initially, with the intention to extend.
