Over het Instituut

Gevestigd in het Utrecht Science Park, is het Westerdijk Instituut een toonaangevend onderzoeksinstituut van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW). Met meer dan 100.000 levende schimmelstammen zijn we toonaangevend in de mycologie, bestuderen we biodiversiteit, bevorderen we taxonomie en ontwikkelen we technieken om de biologie, ecologie en genetica van schimmels te verkennen. Ons diverse team van 50 medewerkers en een vergelijkbaar aantal internationale gastonderzoekers werkt samen om kritieke vraagstukken in gezondheid, landbouw en industrie aan te pakken.

Onderzoeksomgeving

Bij het Westerdijk Instituut voeren we fundamenteel en toegepast onderzoek uit in de evolutionaire biologie, taxonomie en biodiversiteit. Het instituut heeft een lange geschiedenis van gistonderzoek en was betrokken bij, en leidde later, de taxonomische referentie "The Yeasts". Onze wereldberoemde biobank van filamentous fungi en gisten (waarbij veel typeculturen worden bewaard) is essentieel voor het genereren van referentie-genomen en MALDI-TOF-spectra, die bijdragen aan vooruitgang in de landbouw, medisch onderzoek en biotechnologie. We zijn toegewijd aan het integreren van AI om inzichten in schimmelsoorten, voedselveiligheid en duurzame praktijken te verbeteren.
