We are searching for a Senior Mask Design Engineer with extensive technical expertise to operate at the intersection of technology and customer needs. You will be part of our Design Enablement team, which connects process development, device design, and PIC circuit designers. Our mission is to equip our customers with the tools, methodologies, and services necessary to transform their concepts into manufacturable PICs.

The Role

In this position, you will execute and enhance the end-to-end tape-out flow for SMART Photonics' photonic integrated circuit platforms. Your primary responsibilities include running tape-outs, comprehending the entire post-processing chain, and managing your deliverables. A unique aspect of this role is your responsibility to automate, modularize, and strengthen the scripts and workflows utilized by you and your colleagues daily.

Responsibilities

•

**Tape-Out Execution**: Conduct complete tape-outs, including super-cell creation, PCM cell generation, layer post-processing, GDS validation, and mask ordering. Prepare and validate GDS files for mask production and perform Design Rule Checks (DRC) to ensure compliance with manufacturing standards.

**Post-Processing Script Development**: Develop, refactor, and maintain Python and Ruby-based scripts, ensuring they are modular, reusable, and platform-independent. Create supporting tools for the tape-out flow or users of our mask sets.

**Automation & Infrastructure Improvement**: Identify and automate repetitive, error-prone, or manual steps in the tape-out process. Set up and maintain CI validation for post-processing outputs, establish reproducible development environments for scripting, and introduce automated checks for steps that currently depend on manual verification. Contribute to repository structure, naming conventions, and Git workflow standards, ensuring all automated solutions are documented and maintainable by the team.

**Collaboration & Reporting**: Review code from colleagues for quality and maintainability. Collaborate with process integration, R&D, metrology, and procurement on various projects, and coordinate with EDA, PDK, and IT engineers regarding environment, tooling, and access issues.
