Canonical is seeking a Python Software Engineer to join the Certification team, responsible for developing tools that ensure proper functionality of desktops, laptops, servers, and IoT devices. The ideal candidate will be a Python developer with a strong understanding of hardware interactions.
The Certification team focuses on creating tools to certify hardware compatibility with Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Desktop, and Ubuntu Server. We design hardware capable of independently probing devices and develop software testing frameworks that evaluate every aspect of Ubuntu on this hardware.
This role offers a unique opportunity to influence the adoption of Linux across various device categories and industries. Canonical provides a dynamic team environment and numerous opportunities for learning and development. The team operates primarily in EMEA time zones, collaborating with colleagues in the Americas and APAC.
Collaborating with silicon companies, OEMs, ODMs, and internal teams, you will help ensure a seamless and secure Ubuntu experience, contributing to the enhancement of Linux offerings across a growing range of devices.
We are looking for a proactive software engineer experienced in Python, focused on test automation tools or Linux-based embedded hardware. This position allows you to drive industry advancements by enabling new Linux hardware testing capabilities and expanding certification efforts for deeper test coverage.
Key responsibilities include maintaining and developing new features for Python-based test automation tools like Checkbox, inventing methods for remote automated testing, building software for in-house testing hardware, writing functional and performance tests to support hardware enablement, and participating in international meetings 2-3 times a year.
Required skills include proficiency in Python, a quality-oriented and pragmatic approach to software design, interest in test automation methodologies, previous experience with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions, and the ability to work effectively in a globally distributed team. Desired skills encompass a passion for tinkering, experience in agile environments, hardware testing experience (especially in IoT), and familiarity with C programming.
