In Customized Energy Systems, a division of Exide Technologies, we focus on software that manages Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These systems utilize various peripherals to control battery temperature, monitor safety, and ensure effective energy management. As BESS becomes crucial for energy transition and grid stability, leading vendors are incorporating AI-driven analytics and digital twins to enhance battery lifespan and minimize operational costs. Our existing BESS systems already produce high-resolution operational data, which is logged locally and partially transferred to the cloud for visualization. The next phase involves turning this data into actionable insights through AI models and a digital twin approach.
The Role
As an R&D Trainee, you will engage in a project that merges energy systems, data analytics, and applied AI. The assignment is modular and can be tailored to your educational level (HBO/MSc). Key activities may include:
This project is exploratory and research-focused while being closely tied to operational systems.

Analyzing existing BESS operational data (voltages, currents, temperature, SOC, events).
•
Defining KPIs and health indicators related to capacity loss and imbalance.
•
Developing and validating AI models for capacity estimation and imbalance detection.
•
Creating a digital twin prototype for scenario analysis (e.g., impact of imbalance, aging, or operating conditions).
•
Translating results into clear outputs for service and O&M applications.
•
Designing or advising on a cloud-based infrastructure for AI analytics (data flow, model execution, outputs).
