The Role

We are seeking a Software Maintenance Engineer to engage in a dynamic role focused on Linux-based infrastructure and applications. This position encompasses all layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open source applications utilized by large enterprise customers. This role will challenge you to leverage your engineering skills across various aspects of Ubuntu and the applications that our clients rely on.

Responsibilities

• Resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes and other open source software.
• Maintain close collaboration with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
• Participate in upstream communities.
• Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and collaborate with upstream for inclusion.
• Review code produced by other engineers.
• Demonstrate sound judgment in technical methods and techniques.
• Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
• Engage in team discussions to enhance processes, tools, and documentation.
• Maintain clear, technical, and concise communication.
• Work remotely with occasional international travel (up to 10%) for team meetings and conferences.

Requirements

• Exceptional academic background in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
• Experience with Linux and open source software.
• Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
• A strong desire to learn new technologies and tackle challenging issues.
• Willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events.
