The Opportunity We are seeking an Underwriter for Builders Risk to join our Rotterdam team. This key role is within a strategically important area of the business, allowing you to develop your expertise while being part of a reputable team. Depending on your experience, you will: - Contribute to underwriting complex risks and support portfolio decisions - Gradually take ownership of accounts and broker relationships - Help shape portfolio development and drive profitable growth This role encompasses ownership and progression, involving you in the underwriting lifecycle from risk assessment to portfolio management. The Role in Practice This position merges technical underwriting, commercial thinking, and relationship management. You will assess risks, review complex projects, work closely with brokers, and contribute to business decisions for MSIG Specialty Marine. This is not a purely transactional role; you will apply judgement, challenge risks, and develop a commercial mindset, with support available as you take ownership. You will handle a diverse range of shipbuilding risks at shipyards, including dredging, mega yachts, offshore, military, and special vessels, focusing on new builds, repairs, conversions, and energy-related risks. The portfolio is highly international, covering markets such as: - The Netherlands - London / UK - Germany, France, Spain - US / Canada and global markets - Eastern Europe This fast-paced environment requires you to: - Manage multiple priorities and deadlines - Balance underwriting, administration, and client engagement - Build confidence in decision-making with incomplete information What You Will Be Doing - Underwriting Builders’ Risk and Energy risks per appetite and guidelines - Managing and developing a portfolio or supporting portfolio management - Building and maintaining relationships with brokers and clients - Conducting risk assessments using data and market knowledge - Monitoring portfolio performance and supporting improvements - Contributing to underwriting strategy and identifying opportunities - Collaborating with claims and internal teams for alignment - Representing MSIG Specialty Marine in the market This role allows you to contribute to how the business writes risk. What We Are Looking For Experience - Background in marine insurance, underwriting, or a related field - Exposure to Builders Risk, Hull, Machinery, Energy, or similar lines is beneficial but not essential - Experience analyzing or supporting complex risks - Experience working with brokers, clients, or internal stakeholders We welcome candidates from the wider marine ecosystem (e.g., broking, surveying, operations, legal) who understand risk across the value chain and are motivated to develop in underwriting.
